About the Fellowship
The Library of Congress's Kluge Center invites qualified scholars to apply for a post-doctoral fellowship for advanced research based on the Alan Lomax Collection. The Lomax Collection is a major collection of ethnographic field audio recordings, motion pictures, photographs, manuscripts, correspondence and other materials that represent Lomax’s lifetime of work to document and analyze traditional music, dance, storytelling and other expressive genres that arise from cultural groups in many parts of the world, particularly the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the Caribbean. Lomax (1915-2002) was one of the greatest documenters of traditional culture during the twentieth century.
The Alan Lomax Fellows Program, established for a period of five years, supports scholarly research that contributes significantly to a greater understanding of the work of Lomax and the cultural traditions he documented over the course of a vigorous and highly productive seventy-year career. It provides an opportunity, for a period of up to 8 months, for concentrated use of materials from the Lomax Collection and other collections of the Library of Congress, through full-time residency at the Library. The program supports research projects in the disciplines of anthropology, ethnomusicology, ethnography, ethno-history, dance, folklore and folklife, history, literature, linguistics, and movement analysis, with particular emphasis on the traditional music, dance, and narrative of the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the Caribbean, as well as methodologies for their documentation and analysis. We encourage interdisciplinary projects that combine disciplines in novel and productive ways.

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (Deadline: January 31, 2012)

	What it is

The Journalism Fellowship Programme at Oxford offers a practical form of professional assistance to established and mid-career journalists. Its purpose is to allow journalists to tackle subjects in greater depth than is possible under deadline pressure.

	How it works

Around 25 journalists from around the globe study in Oxford each year on Fellowships of either three, six or nine months, covering one, two or all three terms of the academic year. Fellows may join the Institute in October, January or April.

	Requirements of RISJ

Fellows are expected to produce a substantial piece of work to an academic standard. They are required to complete an 8,000-10,000 word research paper of publishable quality either as part of the Institute’s research output or independently (for example, as a survey of an important subject, magazine article or part of a book). Fellows may use multimedia in their work. Fellows have to present their research findings in a seminar open to the University.
There is a minimum requirement of 5 years’ full time professional journalistic experience and in order to take full advantage of the excellent facilities of the Institute and of Oxford University, a high level of spoken and written English is required.

	What we offer

Each Fellow is assigned a supervisor, usually an Oxford academic specialising in the journalists’ chosen subject, to advise them on their research. Fellows will also be able to approach other faculty members to supplement and inform their research and are entitled to access to the wealth of information held in the Bodleian Library and other Oxford University facilities and resources.

They will be allocated membership of Green Templeton College with Visiting Scholar status, including dining and other rights, and as such are strongly encouraged to attend university seminars, lectures and classes on all relevant subjects. Of course, Fellows are also warmly invited to participate in the numerous academic and extracurricular activities of the group of mid-career international journalists based here in the RISJ offices in Norham Gardens.

There are numerous specialist facilities within the university, such as regional centres for African, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Eastern and Western European, Japanese and Chinese Studies, and Fellows are more than welcome to take advantage of the University’s language laboratory and computer services. RISJ also organises regular seminars, debates, lectures and study trips: for instance, the RISJ seminar is held weekly during term-time at Green Templeton College as is an in-house seminar to which Fellows are expected to present a paper. The Reuters Institute also runs a weekly ‘Media and Politics Seminar’ jointly with Nuffield College.

No academic credits or qualifications can be obtained through the Fellowship Programme although a certificate is awarded on submission of the Fellows’ Research paper.

The Institute’s media expertise is bolstered by the related work of the Oxford Internet Institute, the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy and the Saïd Business School. The University also hosts many special events that may be of interest to Fellows.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship

A new fellowship program from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) will enable 48 exceptionally talented graduate students from 22 countries to devote their full attention to research at a critical time during their professional development as scientists.

Offered for the first time this year, the International Student Research Fellowships will support science and engineering students during their third, fourth, and fifth year of graduate school.

"HHMI's educational training program is about finding the best talent, regardless of where the students are from," says HHMI President Robert Tjian, who first conceived of the new fellowship. "Not only is this program international, but it goes after students who have already shown they have potential as researchers."

HHMI chose to start this program - a $2 million commitment in its first year - because it recognized a problem: International students in U.S. graduate schools often have difficulty getting funding to support their studies. For example, they are not eligible for federal education and training grants, state scholarships, or other stipends that are reserved only for U.S. citizens. The Institute chose to fund the third to fifth years of graduate school because, by this time, most students have chosen a graduate advisor, identified a research project, and demonstrated their potential for success in the lab.
