Italy: 2 Research Fellow Contracts, project FLUIDCURT (Danube during the Cold War)

The Department of Humanities at the University of Trento invites applications for two research contracts (art. 22, Law 240/2010) within the project "Fluid Curtain: Managing the Danube River During the Cold War" (FLUIDCURT), led by Dott. Francesco Magno.

The project examines Danube governance across the politically divided Europe of the Cold War (1948-1989), combining environmental history, New Cold War History, political geography, and digital humanities. Candidates must specify which subproject they are applying for:

Subproject 1: "Federal Republic of Germany and the Danube" - focus on the Danube-Main-Rhine Canal and West German business/political actors. Requires strong command of German and documented research experience in German archives.

Subproject 2: "Yugoslavia and the Danube" - focus on Yugoslav efforts to develop the Danube for inland waterway transport and hydroelectric power, including the Iron Gates plants and/or Morava-Vardar Canal project. Requires strong command of Serbo-Croatian and documented research experience in archives of the former Yugoslavia.

Requirements: PhD (or expected within 6 months) in Contemporary History, Environmental History, History of International Relations, or related fields; excellent English; a publication record appropriate to career stage; ability to work independently and in a team.

Contract duration: 24 months (renewable once for a further two years), starting 1 December 2026 or later by agreement. Gross annual salary: EUR 34,223.14.
