Italy: PhD Position in Numerical Analysis – ERC Project
I am looking for a PhD candidate to join my research group at the University of Verona in Italy, within the framework of my ERC Starting Grant project ALcHyMiA.
The research focuses on the development of cutting-edge numerical methods: specifically, high-order accurate Lagrangian-type FV and DG schemes on moving polyhedral meshes for the solution of hyperbolic equations, with applications ranging from fluid-dynamics to astrophysics.
This position offers a high-level research environment with a strong emphasis on mathematical innovation, international collaboration, and modern numerical implementation. Candidates with a strong interest in programming in compiled languages (such as C and Fortran) and in HPC implementation will be particularly valued.
More details can be found at: www.elenagaburro.it/ALcHyMiA.html.
Interested candidates are kindly requested to contact Prof. Elena Gaburro at elena.gaburro@univr.it as soon as possible by sending their CV, their bachelor and master transcripts, and a very short summary of their relevant skills for the project.

Title: Development of novel and effective Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian ADER FV and DG schemes on moving 3D polyhedral meshes
Keywords: Numerical Analysis, Hyperbolic PDEs, Lagrangian Methods, Polygonal & Polyhedral Meshes, High-Order Methods, HPC, Finite Volumes, Discontinuous Galerkin, Fluid-dynamics, Astrophysics.
Framework & Topic:
The research is funded by the ERC Starting Grant ALcHyMiA (GA 101114995).
The candidate will work on the development and validation of new numerical methods (FV/DG type) for nonlinear hyperbolic equations using direct ALE techniques.
The goal is to design and validate high-order schemes on classical and degenerate space-time 3D/4D control volumes, implementing them in a parallel Fortran code (HPC).
The specific research focus will be tailored to the student’s potential and preferences within the project framework.
Activities & Benefits:
- Innovation: Development of novel numerical schemes and scientific writing.
- Global Outlook: Fully funded international research periods and conferences.
- Salary: 1350 – 1450 euros net/month.
Deadlines:
- Contact: elena.gaburro@univr.it as soon as possible (ideally by April 2026).
- Application opens: May/June 2026.
- Start date: November 1, 2026.
